Growing & Care

How long does it take for seeds to germinate?

Most herb seeds begin to sprout within 7–14 days. Some varieties, such as lavender or parsley, may take 2–4 weeks. Keep the growing plug moist and place the jar in a warm, bright location.

What should I do if my seeds are not germinating?

Seeds may take longer to germinate depending on temperature and light. Place the jar in a warm, bright location or under a plant grow light, and make sure the water level stays at the 16 oz line so the wick can keep the growing plug moist. Some seeds may take 2–4 weeks to sprout.

Why is there mold on the growing plug?

Occasionally you may see white, gray, or green mold on the plug. This is common with organic growing media and is usually harmless. As the plant begins growing, the mold typically disappears on its own.

Why is there green algae in the jar?

Algae can develop when water and light are present. It is harmless to the plant. If desired, you can rinse the jar and replace the water.

What should I do if I see mold?

No action is usually required. As your plant begins growing, the mold typically disappears on its own.

You can also:

• Add fresh water to the jar

• Increase airflow around the plant

• Gently rinse the surface of the plug if desired

These simple steps will quickly reduce visible mold.

How much water should I add?

Fill the jar to the 16 oz line. The wick should be about two-thirds submerged so it can draw water upward and keep the growing plug moist for the seeds.

Do I need direct sunlight?

Place your plants in a bright location with indirect sunlight. If natural light is limited, a plant grow light works very well.

How often should I change the water?

Check the water level regularly and refill as needed. If the water becomes cloudy, you may replace it with fresh water.

When should I add plant food?

Herbs can grow well with just water in the early stages. Once the seedlings have developed several leaves, you may add a small amount of liquid plant nutrient if desired to support continued growth.

Why are my seedlings tall and thin?

This usually means the plant needs more light. Move the jar closer to a window or place it under a plant light.

How do I harvest my herbs?

Harvest herbs regularly by trimming the outer leaves or stems. This encourages the plant to grow fuller and produce more leaves.

Why are my leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves can happen if the plant is not receiving enough light or nutrients. Make sure your plant is placed in a bright location. If the plant has been growing for several weeks, adding a small amount of liquid plant nutrient may help support healthy growth.

Why are my plants growing slowly?

Slow growth is usually related to insufficient light or cool temperatures. Herbs grow best in bright light and warm conditions (65–75°F / 18–24°C). Moving the plant to a sunnier spot or using a plant light can help.

Can I transplant the herbs to soil later?

Yes. Once your plant has grown several sets of leaves and a healthy root system, it can be transplanted into a pot with soil. Gently remove the plant with the growing plug and plant it directly into the soil.

My plant is getting too tall. What should I do?

Regular trimming encourages herbs to grow fuller and produce more leaves. Harvest the top leaves or stems, which helps the plant grow bushier instead of tall and leggy.

How long can herbs grow in the hydroponic jar?

With proper light and care, herbs can continue growing in the jar for many months. If the plant becomes too large, you can harvest regularly or transplant it into a larger container.

Are the seeds sprayed?

No, we use organic non-GMO seeds certified by CCOF. View Organic Certificate.

The round label on the top of the soil comes off, what should I do?

The purpose of the round sticker is to keep the surface moist and to create a dark environment for the seeds during their germination phase. The seeds are planted about 1/2" below the surface, so they are in a moist and dark environment even without the round sticker. Therefore the loose sticker does not negatively affect germination.
